Hidden Hero: Rhonda
AdvantageCare Physicians in Harlem, NY
Our Hidden Hero this week is Rhonda.
Rhonda has been a registered nurse for 29 years, the last 11 of which have been at the service of AdvantageCare Physicians in Harlem, New York.
We spoke to this dedicated nurse about why she uses Parachute Health, what she likes most about being a nurse, and what she’s most proud of in her life.
What’s your favorite part about working as a nurse? What makes you happy about your job?
I love the variety of people that you meet! And the interesting illnesses that you come across offer ample opportunities to learn.
Helping people and knowing that something that you might be doing might be changing their outcome or changing their outlook in life and in health. That you can make a difference. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to when they’re down.
With nursing, you get to know the patients. They become like family because you see them so often. You can see the changes they’re making, and you can notice when something is wrong. Being involved like that pulls me in.
Nurses can be a catalyst for change.
What’s a challenge you’re facing right now?
Not having enough free time. It seems like you’re at work more than anything else. So when you get home, it doesn’t feel like you have much time for yourself. You have to cram your life into evenings and days off.
To us, you’re already a hero but if you had a real superpower, what would it be?
Any power from X-Men or Black Panther!
What has made you most proud in life?
The thing that makes me most proud in my life is my children and my husband. To be here to see my children grow up and to see my grandchildren, and to be the best person and role model for them, that’s the thing that I’m most proud of. I almost died having surgery so it’s always in the back of my mind that I might not have been here for that. That’s why I make the most of every day.
